At our hospital and in the community, the role of a midwife is both an incredible privilege and a daily challenge.
In our close-knit community, it is not unusual for a single, dedicated midwife to guide a mother through her entire pregnancy journey. This continuity of care extends to hospital births, where often the same midwife will guide a mother through the birthing process; from contractions, through to labour and delivery. It is a unique opportunity to witness the strong bond between mothers and babies as they navigate those precious early hours and days together.

The most rewarding part of my job is giving good care, which I can do here because I am under less pressure. I can give women more concentrated care for things like breastfeeding support and I can build that little temporary bond with a family and continue their care on the ward, rather than handing them over to a different department.

1:1 care in established labour. 6 qualified midwifes on the floor day and night.
